Last week President Obama and his union-controlled National Labor Relations Board filed a complaint against Boeing for wisely choosing to "dual source" the production of the new 787 aircraft in South Carolina (a right to work state). The complaint asserts that Boeing made the choice based not on strategic business plans but rather as a snide "retaliation for past strike activity" towards Boeing's union. Boeing of course refutes that claim and insists that their decision was based on commitments to customers and financial sensibilities.
Regardless of the catalyst, the NLRB complaint is far-reaching at best. Boeing’s decision was neither illegal nor financially flawed. Yet in no uncertain terms the board’s accusations exhibit the true nature of the big government beast; an administration known for scare tactics is backing Boehing into a corner.
The “pay for play” dynamic has long been an understood part of politics. Boeing is no exception and their mutually beneficial relationship with Washington is well documented. Unfortunately for Boeing, they are just beginning to understand the consequences of getting into bed with the government. You end up with the equivilent to a political STD, get impregnanted with their bastard child, forced into a loveless union and become a ward of the state. All you're left with in the end is a nasty rash and a bunch of Republicans saying "I told you so."
